Barbecue Wood Chip BBQ Smoker Box
Use Wood Chips on Gas
I have always owned charcoal BBQ’s so never really had a problem getting that natural smokiness into my BBQ food. In 2015, I invested in a gas BBQ – mainly for convenience – and this smoker box has really helped to get those smokey flavours into the food.
The way it works is you soak your chips for around 30 minutes before you put the box on the BBQ. The box has a removable lid which has 8 holes in it. You fill the stainless steel box up with the soaked woodchips and then place the lid back on, before placing over direct heat on your BBQ. Within 5 minutes you will start seeing smoke being generated. You can try different flavour wood chips and they are very easy to get hold of.
I used this box ALOT over the first 6 months of ownership. I tend to use it when doing larger cuts of meats on the BBQ over a longer period of time and the smoke really does infuse the meat. Over time the box on the outside will look like it has been used and the inside will turn black from the burning of the wood chips, but the box keeps it’s structural integrity and feels as sturdy as it did on day one using the smoking box.
I would not be without this product if I still cooked lots on gas. It has been a great purchase and the flavours that I have been able to get into the meat including cherry, beech, oak. Cheery is sweeter and more subtle whereas oak is one of the stronger wood types you will try.
If you feel this is a bit of a luxury purchase you could create your own smoker box by wrapping your soaked chips in heavy-duty foil and making some holes in the top which will give you the same effect. Personally, I would recommend buying your own smoker box.
If you only own a gas barbecue some would argue that it is difficult to get that woody smokiness into the food that comes more naturally on charcoal BBQ’s. This product is a great way to be able to use different flavour wood chips on gas barbecues and infuse some of that smokiness we all love into your BBQ food.
