A Evening with KungFuBBQ at Berber&Q
Berber&Q – Just Stunning!
A couple of weeks ago I got to meet Nathan who runs KungFuBBQ whilst enjoying some stunning food at Berber&Q. Nathan was down with work and suggested we try Berber&Q. He has been cooking a tonne load from their book, as has Tim (aka silverbackgrill). It was the cooks both of them have been doing that pushed me into buying the book. I have now cooked 2 recipes from it and both were fantastic.
I have given it away a bit but Berber&Q was absolutely fantastic.
We arrived at the restaurant at around 630pm. It is located in a railway arch just off the A10 and round the corner from Hagerston overground station. It was a little bit of a hike to get up there from Reading but definitely well worth it.
The restaurant has a long bar area with an open kitchen at the far end which I always love. It felt very warm and welcoming. We were shown to our table where we then proceeded to order a Lebanese beer to start with (later we tried a Moroccan beer).
The general service was brilliant all evening. Very attentive staff and also very knowledgeable about the food.
All the food is cooked over charcoal and we were lucky to get a tour of the kitchen. Whilst we were there a delivery of Holm Oak from the London Log Company got delivered. They must go through a tonne of the stuff.
Onto the Food
Josh Katz came out of the kitchen to greet us. I think he has (unsurprisingly) been impressed with Nathan’s cooks from the Berber&Q book.
Josh recommended a selection of starters for us which consisted of Houmous with flatbread, Halloumi, and Harissa Hot Wings. The wings were a dish I had tried cooking myself from the book and I have to say these tasted absolutely superb. All the starters tasted great, evidenced by the fact there was nothing left on the plates.
For the main, we decided to order 2 mains each and share. There is a great selection of vegetarian dishes so we opted for 2 meat and 2 vegetarian dishes.
For the meat dishes, we opted for the Sweet Tea Brined Baby Chicken and the Kofte Cheeseburger. For the veggie dishes, we went for the Pit Beans and Sweetcorn.
Everything was so delicious! I am not a huge veggie fan but the Sweetcorn was unbelievable. The Pit Beans also tasted great with a lovely amount of heat.
We also had to go for dessert with Nathan opting for Chocolate Mousse and I had the Rose Malabi.
You are missing out if you don’t go!
This was one of the best meals I have had for a very long time. Everything we had tasted absolutely fantastic and it was great meeting Josh Katz. The staff are also super friendly and really attentive. I loved the ambiance of Berber&Q. By the time we left at around 830-9pm the place was full and absolutely buzzing.
A superb evening at a great restaurant, with good company. I would really recommend you try Berber&Q, you definitely will not be disappointed!
