Are BBQ Meat Resting Blankets Worth Buying?

If you’re spending 10 or 12 hours cooking the perfect brisket, don’t let impatience spoil it in the final hour.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is slicing into meat too soon. Resting isn’t just a nice extra; it’s an essential part of great barbecue. Give your meat time to relax, and you’ll be rewarded with a juicier, more tender result.

For years, my routine never changed. Once the meat came off the barbecue, I’d wrap it and place it into an insulated cool box to rest while I got everything else ready. It’s a method that’s worked well and one I’d still happily recommend today.

Recently though, I got bought an insulated BBQ meat resting blanket. These have started appearing on Instagram and Amazon. Rather than using a cool box, they’re designed specifically for resting larger cuts of meat after cooking.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t convinced it would make much difference. A couple of uses in, and I’ve stopped reaching for the cool box.

Why Resting Meat Matters

When meat cooks, the muscle fibres tighten, and the juices are pushed towards the centre of the joint.

If you slice into it immediately, a lot of those juices simply end up on your chopping board instead of staying where you want them, inside the meat.

Resting gives those muscle fibres time to relax and allows the juices to redistribute throughout the joint. The result is meat that’s noticeably more succulent and easier to carve or pull apart.

It’s one of the simplest ways to improve your barbecue, yet it’s often overlooked.

So, What Is a BBQ Meat Resting Blanket?

Think of it as an insulated bag that’s designed specifically for barbecue.

Once your meat has finished cooking, you place it inside the blanket and zip it closed. The insulation slows down heat loss, helping to keep the meat hot while it rests.

The one I’ve been using is well insulated, has a waterproof inner lining that’s easy to wipe clean and is large enough for the sort of joints most of us cook regularly. There are now several very similar options available on Amazon, all based on the same basic idea.

It’s not trying to cook the meat any further. It’s simply helping you hold it at a good serving temperature while the resting process does its job.

My First Impressions

What surprised me most wasn’t the insulation; it was how convenient it is.

Instead of digging the cool box out of the shed, lugging it round to where I cook, and then packing everything away afterwards, I now have one dedicated bag that’s always ready to use.

It folds away neatly in a cupboard, weighs very little and takes seconds to get ready.

It’s one of those products that quietly simplifies part of your BBQ routine.

I Still Wrap My Meat First

One thing I haven’t changed is wrapping the meat before it goes into the blanket.

Whether I’m resting a brisket in butcher paper or wrapping a pork shoulder in foil, I’d always recommend keeping that step.

Wrapping helps retain moisture during the resting period, but just as importantly, it keeps the inside of the blanket much cleaner.

Even though most resting blankets have a waterproof lining, meat juices have a habit of finding every seam and zip. I’d much rather replace a sheet of butcher paper than spend time scrubbing grease out of the bag afterwards.

For me, the blanket isn’t a replacement for wrapping; it’s simply the insulated outer layer.

What Should You Look For?

There are quite a few BBQ resting blankets on the market now and, while the branding varies, there are a few features I’d always look for.

A Good Size

Make sure it’s large enough for the biggest cuts you normally cook. If you enjoy brisket or pork shoulder, there’s little point in buying one that’s only suitable for a chicken.

The one I have easily accommodated a 2kg Boston Butt and 1.5kg Salt Beef joint.

Proper Insulation

A good resting blanket should feel genuinely insulated, not like a padded shopping bag.

The whole purpose is to slow heat loss, so decent insulation is worth paying for.

A Wipe-Clean Interior

No matter how careful you are, there will eventually be the odd drip of meat juice.

A waterproof lining makes cleaning quick and easy.

Strong Zip and Good Stitching

A resting blanket will often be holding several kilograms of hot meat.

Strong stitching and a quality zip make a big difference to how confidence-inspiring it feels.

Has It Replaced My Cool Box?

Not entirely. If I ever needed to hold meat for many hours or transport it somewhere, I’d still happily use my cool box.

For the vast majority of my weekend cooks though, I’ve naturally started reaching for the resting blanket instead. It’s quicker to set up, takes up very little storage space and has made an already important part of the cooking process even easier.

Sometimes that’s all a good BBQ accessory needs to do.

Is It Worth Buying?

If you regularly cook large cuts that need resting like brisket, pulled pork, beef ribs or other larger joints, I’d say absolutely.

It’s not an accessory that’s going to transform your barbecue, but it does make one of the most important stages of the cook more convenient. It’s reasonably priced, but it’s still a luxury buy — if you already have a cool box, you don’t strictly need one.

I’ve reached the point where it’s simply become part of my routine, and I suspect many BBQ enthusiasts would find the same.

Final Thoughts

Not every BBQ accessory earns a permanent place in my kit. Plenty get used once or twice before disappearing to the back of the garage. This won’t!

It hasn’t changed the way I barbecue or replaced the importance of resting meat properly. What it has done is make that process quicker, tidier and far more convenient for me.

If you’re already taking the time to cook great barbecue, giving your meat a proper rest is one of the easiest ways to improve the finished result.

A good BBQ resting blanket simply makes that step easier, and for me, that’s reason enough to recommend one.
