(H)eat at Home Boxes
During the Covid Pandemic and the various lockdowns, we became big fans of (H)eat at Home boxes. The basic concept of these is that they give you a restaurant experience at home. It’s never going to be the same, but it was aiming to replace something that many of us took for granted.
This really suited my wife and I. We really enjoy food, but sometimes find the whole process of getting dressed up and debating who will drive or whether we should get a taxi can add a little stress to the process. This is why we are delighted that the (H)eat at Home concept is here to stay.
The Experiences
Our favourite (H)eat at Home experiences are the ones from Home-X. They offer different themed experiences from around the world, come in a lovely presentation box, and include a bottle of wine. They are also generously priced so provide great value and most importantly the food is really good.
Other (H)eat at Home experiences we have tried, include various ones from Dishpatch, which on the whole are really good albeit a little more expensive and we don’t feel offer as good a value as Home-X.
We have also tried, boxes from individual restaurants. My local Indian restaurant, Clays Hyderabadi started (H)eat at Home deliveries in the pandemic and quite quickly went national, with the likes of Jay Rayner and Tom Parker-Bowles giving them critical acclaim. The boxes from Hawksmoor have also been a regular, although alas Hawksmoor has now stopped their boxes.
On the whole, the experience is great with only one bad experience from L’Ortolan (an ex-Michelin star restaurant in Reading) which was awful and more so, when you look at what they charged!!!
When Finish and Feast got in touch to ask me if we would like to try their BBQ range, a collaboration with Sauce Shop, we jumped at the chance.
Finish and Feast (H)eat at Home
The team at Finish and Feast sent through a few of their dishes to try. This included:
- Lechon Pork Belly with Honey Sriracha Glaze and Asian Salad
- Charred Corn with Blue Cheese, Hot Sauce, and Crispy Onions
- Charred Chipotle Hispi Cabbage with Chipotle Mayonnaise
- Confit Beef Cheek with Onion Chutney
- The Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger
It was a lot of food, so we decided to split it over three-weekend dinners, all cooked on the SNS Kettle.
All the dishes are easy to prepare and cook. Even if you are not that confident with the BBQ you would have little problem cooking all the meals we tried. Failing that you could always just use the oven.
The instructions are really clear which obviously helps with the cooking.
I also like that you can ‘mix and match’ the dishes, so rather than having a fixed menu you can put your own one together from the available dished. It is also worth mentioning they also have a non-BBQ range.
As you would expect, all the packaging is recyclable.
Lechon Pork Belly with Honey Sriracha Glaze and Asian Salad
When opening this one I was a little worried that there would not be enough for 2 of us to share, but there was ample.
This was really easy to cook, setting up the BBQ with 2 zones (indirect and direct), and cooking on the indirect heat for 15 minutes before giving the pork a little char on the direct portion of the BBQ.
It was a lovely piece of pork, really easy to cook and the Sriracha Glaze added just the right amount of heat.
The Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger and Charred Corn with Blue Cheese
On Saturday, we opted for burger night with the Corn-on-the-Cob. Once again dead easy to cook on the BBQ.
Finish & Feast describe the burger as ‘a prime beef and bone marrow patty’ is excellent. Personally, I thought it had an excellent ratio of meat to fat, which tasted great and also was really juicy.
The Corn-on-the cob was also enjoyable, but as a health-warning, go easy on the hot sauce – it is FIERY!!!!
Confit Beef Cheek with Onion Chutney with Charred Chipotle Hispi Cabbage with Chipotle Mayonnaise
We saved the beef until Sunday. Cooked in a very similar way to the Pork, with the majority being done in the indirect zone and then finished for a couple of minutes over direct heat.
The beef was so tender, to the point that I need to be a little careful with it when cooking. It just melted in your mouth and again tasted fantastic.
We paired this with the Hispi Cabbage, which was sprinkled with a rub before cooking. Veg always tastes great when cooked on the BBQ. This was no exception and gave me some inspiration to try this myself.
The Verdict
We really enjoyed our weekend of eating the meals from Finish & Feast. I will definitely be ordering from them in the future. As mentioned earlier, we love the (H)eat at Home meals and this is another one added to the list that we will order from.
